Carbon neutrality claims are becoming increasingly common, but not all claims are made using the same level of transparency or independent scrutiny.
OUR PRINCIPLES
Principles That Guide VCNS
Every VCNS is built around seven core principles designed to strengthen confidence in carbon neutrality claims.
Integrity
Claims must be supported by credible evidence.
Transparency
The basis, boundary and period of the claim must be clear.
No Double Counting
Credits and claims must be controlled to prevent duplicate use.
Impartiality
Assessment and decision-making must be protected from conflicts of interest.
Carbon Credit Integrity
Credits must meet defined eligibility, traceability and retirement requirements.
Traceability
Approved claims must be capable of being traced to their supporting verification and carbon credit information.
Reduction First
Carbon credits should complement, not replace, meaningful emission-reduction action.
